CORTEZ GOLD MINES SAFETY AWARDS
Cortez Gold Mine is a significant gold mining and processing facility located in Lander and Eureka County, Nevada, United States. It lies approximately 63 miles (100 km) southwest of Elko. The mine is operated as a joint venture between Barrick Gold Corporation (61.5%) and Newmont Corporation (38.5%). The Cortez complex includes several open pit mines: Pipeline, Crossroads, and Cortez Hills, along with the Cortez Hills underground mine. Ore extracted from these mines is processed at an oxide mill on-site and on leach pads. Refractory ore is shipped to Barrick’s Goldstrike operation for further processing. The mine has a rich history dating back to 1862, with silver being the primary commodity until the 1940s. Cortez Gold Mine has played a crucial role in Nevada’s mining industry and remains one of the largest mines in the state and the entire country. Source
GOLDEN SUNLIGHT MINES
Golden Sunlight Mines is owned and operated by Barrick Gold. The mine has been in operation since 1975. In 2016, it produced 34,000 ounces (964 kg) of gold. The mine shut down in 2019 when gold production was no longer economically viable. They have initiated a groundbreaking project to reprocess ground rock, known as tailings, from which gold was previously extracted. This project is expected to create 75 or more jobs and tens of millions of dollars in tax revenue and benefits to the State over the next decade, while removing a source of potential water pollution from the mine site. NERCO MINERALS CO.
NERCO Minerals Company was part of NERCO, Inc., a Fortune 500 firm involved in low-sulfur coal, oil, and natural gas production. It was created in 1977 due to changes in US federal law and had several subsidiaries. NERCO Minerals Company invested in minerals, acquiring gold and silver rights in eastern Oregon in 1980. While it diversified, not all ventures were successful, including a failed attempt at uranium mining. In 1993, NERCO, Inc., the parent company of NERCO Minerals Company, was acquired by the Kennecott Corporation, a Utah-based subsidiary of the Rio Tinto Group. As a result, it seems that NERCO Minerals Company, as a distinct entity, no longer exists, with its operations possibly absorbed or continued under new ownership. Source
