Deak Perera
Deak & Co. Ltd was a financial institution founded by Nicholas Deak in 1939. Deak, a Hungarian-born American banker, established the company as a foreign exchange business in New York. During World War II, he worked for the Office of Strategic Services (OSS) in various locations. After the war, Deak resumed his business and expanded into banking and dealing in gold coins and bullion. However, in the late '70s and early '80s, the company faced multiple scandals related to money laundering and criminal connections. Allegations included laundering money for Latin American drug traffickers, involvement in the Lockheed bribery scandals, and smuggling currency from the Philippines. As a result, Deak & Co. declared bankruptcy in December 1984 to reorganize. In 1985, the company was purchased by a Singapore lawyer, with its most valued asset being Deak’s Swiss bank. The foreign exchange and gold business were later sold to Australia’s Martin Properties Ltd. Source
